Berkeley County

Berkeley County

The roots of Berkeley County were planted when the first settlers made their way there in the 1600s; but today it is one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina, offering its residents quality and affordable lifestyles while being only a short distance from the metropolitan amenities in downtown Charleston.  Berkeley County is made up in part by the communities of Goose Creek, North Charleston, Hanahan, Jamestown and the county seat of Moncks Corner.

Any Revolutionary War history buff will be in hog-heaven in Berkeley County, the site of 32 of the 166 Revolutionary war battles.  Additionally, there are an astounding 84 historical markers located in Berkeley County.  Visitors can learn about Brigadier General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox” well known for his elusive tactics during the Revolutionary War at historical markers in Pineville.  Or learn about several plantation sites that can be found in Goose Creek, Moncks Corner, Mount Holly and Cordesville.

If history isn’t your thing but being on the open water is, Berkeley County has you covered there as well!  Berkeley County boasts 25 Blueway kayak trails ranging from Easy to Very Strenuous throughout its many creeks, and rivers as well as Lake Marion and Lake Moultrie.  Lake Marion is the largest lake in South Carolina, encompassing over 110,000 acres with 315 miles of shoreline and is well known for its fishing abundance.  Lake Moultrie, though just over ½ the size of its neighbor is also well known for its fishing and wildlife.  Both lakes can be accessed through a variety of public boat ramps.

And Berkeley County hosted the recently concluded season of HGTV’s Home Renovation show “Rock the Block” which featured the community of Nexton while showcasing all the Lowcountry had to offer!  Though less famous than its neighboring county of Charleston, there is a lot going on in Berkeley County!  Come and explore!
